Shep was one of the most-popular and most-famous of all the pets on the Blue Peter show.

Shep, a border collie, made a great comedy double act with presenter John Noakes who had previously been the main handler of Patch - son of the first Blue Peter dog, Petra.

When Patch died Shep joined the show in 1971.

Shep was known for getting over-excited and jumping around which led to John Noakes saying regularly "Get Down, Shep" - which became a popular catchphrase with impersonators and comedians and even inspired a comedy record by the Barron Knights.

Shep also appeared in a spin-off childrens' show called Go with Noakes, from 1976 to 1980, where the two tackled a range of activities and adventures.

Shep and John Noakes left Blue Peter in June 1978 and Shep died on 17 January 1987.

Your memories and messages

Get Down Shep! Fond memories from my childhood. I always wanted a dog but could not have one of my own so, in my head, Shep was it. Sleep well special boy - never forgotten by thousands and thousands of us kids of the 70's xxx
