Pickles, a Scottish Border Collie Cross, shot to fame after he was credited with finding the stolen World Cup trophy.

His owner David Corbett had left his home with Pickles to make a phone call from a phone box when Pickles drew his attention to a paper-wrapped package in his front garden in Norwood, London, on 27 March, 1966.

Mr Corbett took off the paper wrapping to find that it was the gold Jules Rimet trophy – awarded to the winners of the World Cup – and stolen seven days earlier.

1966 was the year that England hosted the World Cup and the trophy had been on display as part of the "Sport with Stamps" display at the Stampex exhibition at Central Hall in Westminster, London.

For a while four-year-old Pickles and his owner became celebrities appearing on TV, in newspapers and even a feature film.

When England in due course won that year’s World Cup Final at Wembley, Pickles and his owner were invited to the celebration dinner and it is said that the dog licked the plates clean.

But very sadly the lovable Pickles died when his choke lead caught on a tree as he chased a neighbour’s cat. He was buried in the back garden of his owner’s new home in Surrey.

A far from factual film was made in 2006 called Pickles the Dog Who Won The World Cup which featured comedian Harry Enfield doing the voice of Pickles.
